How the Fakir Got the Name Sai
W
hen the marriage - party came to Shirdi, it alighted at the foot of a
Banyan tree in Bhagata Mhalsapati’s field near Khandoba’s temple. The carts were
loosened in the open court-yard of Khandoba’s temple. The carts were loosened in
the open court-yard of Khandoba’s temple, and the members of the party descended
one by one, and the Fakir also got down. Bhagat Mhalsapati saw the young Fakir
getting down and accosted Him "YA SAI" (Welcome Sai). Others also addressed Him
as Sai and thence-forth he became known as Sai Baba.
Contact with Other Saints
S
ai Baba began to stay in a deserted Masjid. One Saint named Devidas
was living in Shirdi many years before Baba came there. Baba liked his company.
He stayed with him in the Maruti temple, in the Chavadi, and some time lived
alone. Then came another Saint by name Jankidas. Baba spent most of His time in
talking with him, or Jankidas went to Baba’s residence . So also one Vaishya
house-holder Saint, from Puntambe by name Gangagir always frequented Shirdi.
When he first saw Sai Baba, carrying pitchers of water in both hands, for
watering the garden, he was amazed and said openly, "Blessed is Shirdi, that it
got this precious Jewel. This man is carrying water to-day; but He is not an
ordinary fellow. As this land (Shirdi) was lucky and meritorious, it secured
this Jewel." So also one famous Saint by name Anandnath of Yewala Math, a
disciple of Akkalkot Maharaj came to Shirdi with some Shirdi people. When he saw
Sai Baba, he said openly, "This is a precious Diamond in reality. Though he
looks like an ordinary man, he is not a ‘gar’ (ordinary stone) but a Diamond.
You will realize this in the near future." Saying this he returned to Yewala.
This was said while Sai Baba was a youngster.

TATYA - SWEET UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES
“After I left the mosque, Baba and Mahalsapati picked up
all the fruit I had flung away in my temper. Baba sent word to me via
Mahalsapati to come to the mosque. I went back eagerly in the hope that Baba had
become more pliant and would eat the fruit. But I was disappointed to see that
he was as adamant as ever. I again went away angrily to see the
tamasha. Baba again sent
Daggu and Kondya to convince me somehow or other to come back to the mosque. I
refused to go. After a while Mahalsapati came again and said that Baba was
waiting anxiously for me to come back. I was not willing to go, but in the end,
I was persuaded. Baba touched some fruit to his lips and gave them all to
Mahalsapati. “Bhagat, you eat some of these. Give the rest to him and ask him to
eat,” said Baba. My ego was satisfied and my anger lessened. Baba did not talk
to me the whole night long. He himself had sent for the fruit from the market.
Why then did he not eat them is a secret only he knows.”
Baba’s acts are deep
and beyond the comprehension of mere mortals such as us. If any other devotee
were in the place of Tatya, he would have thought, “Why did Baba refuse the
fruit? Anyway it is a leela
only Baba can fathom,” and he would have humbly and gratefully accepted the
fruit from Baba.
The intimacy between
Tatya and Baba became the cause of Tatya’s temper and adamant attitude towards
Baba. Baba did not explain to Tatya why he did not eat the fruit. Maybe Tatya
would not have understood the reason even if Baba had explained. So Baba
himself, who was totally without ego and was the very embodiment of kindness,
conceded to Tatya by touching the fruit first to his lips and then giving them
to him to eat as a compromise.
